Beginning of the Journey from Nuwara Eliya

Their Journey began in Nuwara Eliya, where Leanne and Dan hopped into their reliable rented tuk-tuk, lovingly named “Abu” which they got from Tuktukrental.com. Yes, you can actually rent a tuk-tuk in Sri Lanka if that’s something you’re keen on.

Fun fact – in Sri Lanka, driving is on the left side of the road. So if you’re thinking of renting a vehicle as a tourist, just make sure you’re comfortable cruising on the left.

On their way to Ambuluwawa from Kandy, they stopped at a nearby food court for breakfast and decided to sample some Sri Lankan breakfast dishes. One of the items they tried was Lavariya, a well-known traditional Sri Lankan sweet dumpling. This delicacy consists of caramelized coconut encased in a string hopper. Typically enjoyed for breakfast or as an afternoon snack, it is often accompanied by tea and bananas.

If you’re curious about why so many people love to visit Ambuluwawa from Kandy, there are a couple of reasons for this.

Ambuluwawa is just a short hour’s drive from Kandy (only 25km away), making it a convenient and accessible destination for travelers. Many tourists choose to stop by Kandy first because of its rich religious significance.

Kandy is a key pilgrimage spot for Buddhists from all over the globe. The renowned Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is located here, housing a sacred tooth believed to have belonged to Buddha himself. This temple is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also a vibrant hub of Buddhist traditions and culture. Kandy is truly a gem in Sri Lanka, offering a wonderful experience for all visitors.

On their way to Ambuluwawa, they attempted to offer a ride to the locals in their TukTok, make sure to check out their video to see how it went. No spoilers here.

The Stop at Ramboda Falls before reaching Ambuluwawa

Another highlight of their trip was a stop at the majestic Ramboda Falls, the 11th tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. The waterfall is located right off the main road between Colombo, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya, making it a popular stop for travelers. There is a viewing platform at the top of the falls, and you can also hike down to the bottom for a closer look.

The middle section of the waterfall is a popular spot for swimming. The water is cool and refreshing, and there are plenty of rocks to sit on and relax on.

Arriving at the Ambuluwawa Tower

As they reached Ambuluwawa, they presented their tickets at the gates. After purchasing tickets and following security instructions, Leanne and Dan left their belongings at the gate to protect them from the monkeys in the vicinity.

Should you be concerned about the monkeys? The answer is both yes and no. As long as you do not have food with you or do not provoke them in any way, they will not disturb you. However, remain cautious of your possessions around these small companions.

The Climb to the Top of the Tower

They happily started climbing the tower and one of the first things you notice is how pleasantly empty it is. It’s nice to have this peaceful moment amidst the usual hustle and bustle you see in Ambuluwawa content on social media, isn’t it? There are several reasons for this delightful tranquility. The tower opens at 07:30 am, which happens to be the perfect time to enjoy it with fewer crowds. As the day goes on, more visitors arrive, and it may get a bit busier around 11 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 5 pm.

Furthermore, the tower is usually busier on weekends and during Poya Days. Poya Day is a monthly Buddhist celebration observed in Sri Lanka. It coincides with the full moon each month, making it a festive and bustling holiday for everyone to enjoy.
